The Indian Judiciary System has made us all proud with the verdict that should have come years ago.Priyadarshini Mattoo, a 23 yr old law student was raped and then brutally murdered in her uncle's flat in Delhi in 1996. Santosh Kumar Singh, the accused was acquitted citing lack of evidence or rather manipulation of the same by CBI. He was the son of J.P. Singh, a former IG of the Delhi Police who had stalked her for days together and being spurned by her revealed his bestial instincts. Years later, the verdict has arrived and our faith in the Indian Judiciary stands restored as of now with the accused being found guilty and arrested.
It was relief for the aged father who had fought with all his might to bring justice to his departed daughter and as I watched him thank the youth of the nation on NDTV, a small prayer escaped me,for Priyadarshini, and also for all of us,all women who encounter problems big or small each day but retain the courage to fight back,to put our foot down and be vocal. It is a victory not only for all of us but for humanity, for human rights.
Priyadarshini would not come back but all I know is now she can rest in peace, now her father can depart in peace knowing that his darling daughter has been given her due, justice that she deserved :))
